Incarcerated People
People who are currently serving a term in prison or jail can’t buy a health insurance plan though Covered California, but once released, they have 60 days to apply during a special-enrollment period. You will also find out if you are eligible for free or low-cost Medi-Cal during this time.
Since you aren’t able to buy a health plan while incarcerated, you aren’t subject to the penalty for not having health insurance.
